The Best Restaurant in Switzerland for kids
If Switzerland isn’t on your bucket list to visit with kids, it should be.
I would come back here every single year if I could, and not just for the views.
If you’re planning a trip, there’s one stop you have to add: Mätti Restaurant. Hands down the best restaurant for kids in Switzerland, but probably the best in the world.
MATTI
Nätschen Mittelstation, 6490 Andermatt, Switzerland
Here’s why it’s worth planning your day around:
Indoor playground for bad weather days
Outdoor playground with views that don’t feel real
Food picky kids will actually eat (and adults will enjoy)
Easy to reach by train, car, or even a hike if you’re feeling ambitious
Zero pressure to rush kids play, parents breathe
It’s the kind of place where lunch turns into a whole day, your kid doesn’t want to leave, and you realize this is why traveling with kids is worth it.
If you’re building a Switzerland itinerary with kids, don’t skip it.
Trust me. The slide wins, and the memories stick.
How to Get to Mattie Family Resturant
🚠 By Gondola (Easiest + Most Fun)
The Gütsch-Express gondola departs directly from Andermatt village and takes you up the mountain in just a few minutes.
Step-free boarding (stroller-friendly)
Smooth ride for kids
Incredible views the entire way up
Drops you right at the top near Mätti Restaurant
👉 This is hands-down the best option if you’re traveling with kids.
🚆 By Train
Andermatt is extremely well connected by train.
Take the train to Andermatt Bahnhof
From the station, it’s a short walk to the Gütsch-Express gondola base
💡 If you’re already traveling through Switzerland by rail, this is seamless.
🚗 By Car
You can drive to Andermatt from cities like Zurich or Lucerne. This is what we did.
You can park in one of Andermatt’s public garages and walk to the Gütsch-Express gondola station
Or you can drive up the mountain itself (what I did) its pretty curvy don’t pick this if you car sick.
🥾 By Foot / Hike (if you’re in for a workout)
For adventurous families or hikers:
There are hiking trails up to Gütsch
Best in warmer months
Not recommended with strollers or little legs unless you’re prepared
The Vibe
Think: classic Swiss mountain restaurant meets real-life Chutes & Ladders.
You sit down expecting a calm lunch. Your kid spots the playground.
You think, “That slide doesn’t look that bad.”
Spoiler: the slide wins.
It’s the kind of place where kids disappear to play and suddenly you’re ordering another drink because no one is rushing you.
Why Families Love Mätti (and Why We Stayed Longer Than Planned)
🛝 The Playground
Kids of all ages are obsessed.
Parents will try it once and immediately understand their limits.
But the slide is just the beginning.
There’s a giant trampoline
Stairs are carved into the mountain that kids sprint up and down over and over and over again.
By the time you’re ready to leave?
They’re tired. Huge win for a road trip or train ride.
And if the weather turns (because… mountains), the indoor playground is just as good:
Gym-style pillows
Hammocks
Climbing and lounging spaces that let kids burn energy without chaos
It’s thoughtful. It’s intentional. And it’s exactly why this place works so well for families.
This isn’t a “play for five minutes and beg to leave” situation.
🍽️ The Food
This is real Swiss comfort food filling, warm, and exactly what you want after mountain air and playground chaos.
Expect:
Hearty alpine dishes
Kid-friendly options like chicken nuggets
Drinks for you and for them
Portions that make hiking feel optional afterward
The kids menu was price about $20 USD per plate, and adults, on average were $40 USD, which is typical for Switzerland meals.
🏔️ The Setting
You’re eating with mountain views that don’t feel real. We spent half our time inside and the other half outside.
My insights
As a mom who’s traveled with her kid to 30+ countries, here’s what I care about:
Can my kid move their body? ✅
Can I sit down for more than five minutes? ✅
Does the place understand that kids don’t whisper? ✅
Will we laugh about this later? Absolutely.
Should You Go?
IYes. Go. And again don’t underestimate the slide. If you want a good laugh you can watch me get launched here.
