How to Get From Guatemala City to Antigua Guatemala

If you’re landing in Guatemala City and heading straight to Antigua, this part is much easier than it sounds.

For us, this was actually one of the smoothest airport arrivals we’ve had in a long time.

Our Arrival Experience (Quick + Easy)

Customs and immigration were surprisingly fast. From landing to walking out of the airport took under an hour total, and that included dealing with a carry-on bag they made us check at the gate, going to the restroom when we got off the plane, and customs and immigration.

It was one of the quickest international arrivals we’ve had.

Important: Customs Form (Do This Before Boarding)

You do need to complete a customs form before boarding your flight to Guatemala you can find it —> here

For us, it was only checked at boarding, not on arrival, but definitely don’t skip it. It’s quick and straightforward, just something to be aware of ahead of time so it doesn’t slow you down. Make sure you take a screenshot of the QR code so when they check, you have it ready.

From the U.S. at the time this was written (December 2025) you do not need a visa to enter the country for up to 90 days. Click below - I linked where I check to see travel requirements before every trip.

I always check to see if I need a VISA using this site, it also gives the website to fill out customs forms, how long your passport needs to be valid, how long you can stay, and any recommendations on vaccines that you can discuss with your medical provider.

Getting From the Airport to Antigua

Once you exit the airport, you have a few options (shuttles, taxis, uber is popular), but with a kid and grandparents, I wanted something simple and direct.

I booked a private driver ahead of time. I found him on an Guatemala facebook group and saw tons of reviews with customers.

You are looking about $50 USD for this transfer.

Why This Worked Well

  • He owns his own company

  • Speaks English

  • Has excellent reviews

  • Uses clean, reliable cars

  • Works with family members who are also licensed drivers

  • He offered lots of tips and tricks to the city

  • He would also negotiate with other people if needed

  • I was easily able to put my daughter's car seat in without rushing

I told him we would be out of the airport by 5pm, but the plane landed early and with the quicker customs we ended up being out of the airport an hour eariler and the driver was already there :)

Some of his family members don’t speak English, but communication was never an issue, and the entire experience felt safe and professional. I also wanted to support locally, versus booking through a large tour company.

How I Booked

I contacted him directly on WhatsApp, which was the easiest option while traveling. His name is Oscar.

I highly recommend messaging ahead of time, especially if you’re arriving later in the day or traveling with kids.

Travel Time to Antigua

The drive from Guatemala City to Antigua took about 1–1.5 hours, depending on traffic. Once you’re on the road, it’s straightforward, and arriving directly at your hotel or Airbnb makes a big difference after a travel day. It is actually not far but the traffic is horrible and it felt better having a safe driver.

Final Thoughts

If Guatemala City to Antigua is the part you’re nervous about, don’t be. Just also want to add, its not recommended to rent a car due to the driving there, and honestly I usually drive all over but the uber, shuttles and driver were so efficient that I would agree.
